The equinox

Twice a year, day and night come out almost exactly the same length everywhere on Earth. Astronomers call those two dates the equinoxes, and the name gives the idea away: equi means equal, nox means night. Equal night.

Here is what is actually going on. Earth spins on an axis that leans about 23 degrees off upright, and that lean keeps pointing the same direction all year while the planet circles the Sun. So for half the year the northern half of the planet is tilted toward the Sun: days are long and the sunlight hits the ground close to straight-on. That is summer. For the other half it is tilted away: days are short and the light arrives at a low slant, spread thin across more ground. That is winter. The equinoxes are the two dates in between, when neither half is tilted toward the Sun and both get an even share of light.

You can check the whole thing yourself with no equipment. In late June you can still be outside playing at half past eight in the evening. By December the streetlights are on before dinner. If you wrote down the time the Sun set on the first of every month, the times would slide earlier and earlier through autumn, cross the halfway mark around September 23rd — the autumn equinox — and keep sliding until the shortest day in late December, when they turn around and start climbing back.

So "the days are getting shorter" is not a mood, it is geometry: your half of the planet is slowly turning away from the Sun. That is what sets up this article, because bare skin needs sunlight to make vitamin D, and after the equinox there is much less of it to go around.

You have seen the word on cereal boxes and gummy bottles for years, but what actually is a vitamin? The field is nutrition, the study of what a body needs to take in from outside, and the word itself was built about a hundred years ago out of vita, the Latin word for life, plus the name of the kind of chemical the first one turned out to be.

Your body is a chemical factory. Out of ordinary food it builds nearly everything it needs — muscle, blood, bone, the stuff that runs your brain. But there is a short list of chemicals it cannot build, or cannot build enough of, and those have to arrive ready-made from outside. Those are the vitamins. You need them in tiny amounts: a day's worth of some of them would not cover the head of a pin. Vitamin D is the odd one out of the list, because bare skin can build it when ultraviolet light from the Sun lands on it — which is why sunshine and vitamins end up in the same article.

The proof that a vitamin is necessary is what goes wrong when it is missing, and each one fails in its own particular way. Take vitamin D. Bones are hard because they are packed with calcium, and calcium comes from food — but it cannot cross from your gut into your blood on its own. Vitamin D is what makes that crossing possible. Take the vitamin away and a child can eat plenty of calcium and still take up very little of it, so the new bone being built is laid down soft. Soft bone bends under the weight of a body walking around on it, and the legs slowly bow outward. That is rickets.

So a vitamin is not fuel, and it is not medicine. It is a small necessary part your body cannot make for itself — which is also why piling on extra usually does nothing at all. A bike needs two wheels to work; a third wheel in the garage does not make it go faster.
