sterile

What it means here:Bostrom is not talking about germs here. He means Mars is empty of life entirely — that nothing ever lived there, not even a bacterium. That is the sense he wants: dead rocks, lifeless sand, a planet where biology never got started at all.
In general:Something sterile is unable to produce or support life. You have probably met the word in a hospital sense — sterile instruments are free of germs — but that is one narrow branch of a bigger meaning. The broader idea is barren, producing nothing, and it stretches beyond biology: a sterile argument goes nowhere, and a sterile room can mean one with no warmth or personality in it.

preclude

What it means here:Bostrom has just argued that we may be the only intelligent species in the galaxy. He is heading off a comfortable conclusion a reader might jump to — that if the hard part is behind us, we must be safe. His reasoning, he says, does not rule that out: the filter could sit in our past and in our future, both at once.
In general:To preclude something is to make it impossible in advance — to shut the door on it before it can happen. It is a favourite word of careful arguers, because it lets you say exactly which possibilities your evidence has eliminated and which it has left standing. Notice that it is stronger than "discourage" and more precise than "prevent": what is precluded was never available in the first place.

- Missing two weeks of practice didn't preclude her from making the team, but it cost her the starting spot.
- Choosing the earlier flight precludes staying for the awards ceremony — the two simply don't fit in one day.
relinquish

What it means here:This is the bleak half of Bostrom's argument. If the hard step is still in front of humanity, then we do not merely have poor odds of spreading across the galaxy — we have to let go of the idea completely. The word carries a note of formal surrender, of handing something over rather than simply losing it.
In general:To relinquish is to give up something you hold — a claim, a right, a hope, a position — usually deliberately, and often reluctantly. It is a more formal cousin of "give up," and it appears constantly in history and law: a monarch relinquishes the throne, a country relinquishes territory, a person relinquishes control. If you can picture your hands actually opening, you have the word.

Fermi's paradox

This is one of the famous puzzles in astronomy — and, underneath, a lesson in logic. In 1950 the physicist Enrico Fermi was at lunch with colleagues when he asked, apparently out of nowhere, "Where are they?"
Here is what was bothering him. Our galaxy holds something like 100 billion stars. Huge numbers of them have planets. Many of those solar systems are billions of years older than ours — so if anyone else was going to develop technology and spread out, they have had an enormous head start. Put those facts together and you predict a busy, noisy galaxy. Then you look up, point the best radio telescopes you have at the sky, listen for fifty years, and hear absolutely nothing.
That gap — between what your reasoning confidently predicts and what you actually observe — is what makes it a paradox. And this is the part worth carrying with you: a paradox is not a broken universe, it is a broken assumption. The world is never wrong; your model of it is. When a solid-looking chain of reasoning predicts something that plainly isn't happening, at least one link in that chain is false, and the paradox is a flashing arrow pointing at it.
Picture inviting 200 classmates to a free party at a great venue. Everyone says they love parties. Nobody shows up. You don't conclude that reality has malfunctioned — you conclude that one of your assumptions was wrong. Maybe the invitations never arrived. Maybe there's a bigger party across town. Bostrom's essay is a serious attempt to work out which assumption about the galaxy is the wrong one.
The Great Filter

The Great Filter is an idea from probability, used in the study of long-term risks to humanity, and it is Bostrom's proposed answer to Fermi's paradox.
Think about what a filter physically does: an enormous amount goes in one side, and almost nothing comes out the other. Now lay out the whole road from a planet forms to a species builds starships and colonizes the galaxy. Billions upon billions of planets start down that road. Zero, as far as we can see, reach the end. So somewhere along it there must be at least one step so wildly improbable that essentially nothing gets through. That step is the Great Filter.
The brilliant move — and the reason this idea is worth learning — is what Bostrom does next. He points out that *it matters enormously where on the road the filter sits. If it is behind us, in the distant past, then we are the freak survivors: we already beat the impossible odds, and the road ahead is comparatively open. If it is ahead* of us, we haven't hit it yet, and we should expect to be stopped exactly as everyone else was.
Here is the shape of the reasoning in miniature. Imagine 10,000 kids enter a music competition and, year after year, nobody reaches the final. You'd correctly conclude that some round is brutally, almost impossibly hard. Now the question that actually decides your fate: have you already passed that round, or is it still in front of you? Same competition, same odds — but those two situations feel completely different if you're the one still playing.
Observation selection effect

This one belongs to statistics, and it is among the most useful thinking tools on this page — a trap that catches very smart people constantly.
Start with a question that sounds silly: survey everyone alive today and ask whether they survived their own childhood. One hundred percent say yes. Does that prove childhood is perfectly safe? Obviously not — the people it wasn't safe for weren't available to answer your survey. The result was guaranteed before you asked, so it taught you nothing.
That is an observation selection effect: when the very fact that you are around to make an observation guarantees what the observation will show, the evidence is worth far less than it appears. The data didn't get collected fairly. It got filtered by the requirement that an observer exist to collect it.
Now watch Bostrom use it. Someone objects: "Life arose here on Earth, the one planet we know well — surely that means life arises easily, and so it must be all over the galaxy." It sounds reasonable. But whether intelligent life is common or almost impossible, every observer who can ask this question is guaranteed to find themselves on a planet where it did arise. Beings on the empty planets aren't puzzling over the question, because there are no beings there. So our own existence is not a fair sample, and "it happened here" is much weaker evidence than it feels like.
Once you have this tool you will see it everywhere. "Every successful founder I interviewed dropped out of college" — you interviewed the successful ones; the dropouts whose companies died weren't in the room. "This old bridge has stood for 200 years, so it must be well built" — you're only looking at the bridges that didn't fall down.
