Proxy measures

This is a core idea in statistics and management. Many of the things we care most about can't be measured directly — how much a student actually understands, how happy customers are, how good a musician is. So we measure a stand-in we can count: a grade, a wait-time metric, a follower count. That stand-in is called a proxy measure (a proxy is someone who stands in for you, like a proxy vote).
A proxy works only as long as it moves together with the real thing. The danger is drift: the number and the reality quietly come apart, and the dashboard keeps saying "fine" while the truth says otherwise. That's exactly what Jeff Bezos caught at Amazon — the system reported hold times under sixty seconds, so he dialed the customer-service line in the middle of the meeting and sat on hold for over ten minutes. The proxy said one thing; the territory said another.
You live with proxies every day: a grade is a proxy for learning (you can raise it by memorizing practice tests without understanding more), and likes are a proxy for whether people actually care. The skill is remembering what the number stands for — and, once in a while, doing Bezos's move: go check the real thing directly.
Feedback loops

An idea from systems thinking, used everywhere from engineering to biology to economics. A feedback loop is when the results of an action flow back to you as information that shapes your next action. Riding a bike is one continuous feedback loop: you drift left, you feel it, you correct right — dozens of times a minute, without thinking.
Now imagine riding with your eyes closed: the actions continue, but the information stops coming back. That's a closed-off loop, and it's how errors pile up unnoticed. Practicing free throws without watching where the ball goes teaches you nothing; taking practice tests but never checking which answers you missed locks your mistakes in place. The article's point is that maps only stay accurate the same way — explorers go into the territory, find where the map is wrong, and send corrections back. Cut off that flow, and the map quietly goes stale while the world moves on.
So when something you're doing isn't improving, ask the systems-thinking question: where is my feedback loop? Is information about my results actually reaching me — and am I letting it change what I do next?
